1-on-1 Private Tutoring vs Classroom Teaching

If I had received consistent private, 1 on 1 in-home tutoring, there is no telling what an amazing success I would be today.

As a teacher, the downfalls of teaching 40 students at one time is blatantly obvious - you can lecture to the masses, but you can not provide 1 on 1 support to all of your students in the class every day. For all you math wizards out there, 50 minute classes, 40 students per class, = 1.25 minutes per student. However, you don't get 50 full minutes of instruction. How about roll call, handing in homework, paperwork shuffling, management issues, etc. You are lucky if you get 45 seconds of teaching per student.

So how do teachers work around this problem? Simple. They preach and lecture to the masses. The teacher's hope is that enough students understand the process of various problems, and that they are able to assist their fellow classmates. However, even the few students that "understand" the Chemistry or Physics content from class, most just understand the process rather than the concept. Not only that, they are not professional teachers and really have no experience or expertise in training and teaching others. This is a sad case of the blind leading the blind.

If a student has an expert tutor watching his every process and move when working on problems, there is so much help that can be bestowed upon the student. The one-on-one environment allows the teacher to correct and modify every single process the student makes. Not only can you affect his learning for the specific class, but our tutors, skilled and experienced tutors, are able to modify the student's way of thinking, way of organizing, and way of approaching problems which will yield benefits that will last for the rest of the student's academic career.

Having a private mentor with you all the time is not inexpensive. How could it be? Not only is it like a personal assistant, but it's an expert in a certain field. Although private tutoring can become costly, it is no where near the expenses of a private school, which offers something of much less value than private tutoring.

Not all private tutoring is created equal. Students teaching students is very common, however Tried & True Tutoring does not employ anyone who doesn't have a college degree, or working on a degree from a prestigious university. Tried and True Tutoring does not employ anyone without tutoring experience. Tried and True Tutoring does not employ unreliable, immature tutors. Tried and True Tutoring goes through a rigorous process to select only the cream of the crop; and even after that, we rigorously train each and every one of our tutors. I always tell my tutors, "If you can learn to teach like me, we will both be extremely successful".

To increase your student's confidence, skill level, organizational skills, grades, college acceptance letters, and anything else related to academic success, then go with a Tried and True tutor. Their skill and experience will be evident during the first session, as well as every subsequent session. Our tutors will take your academic skill and success to new heights. Listen, if you need basic homework help or a few last minute questions, then maybe you can can get the correct answers from an inexperienced tutor who knows the content, but if you are really trying to change your future, and bring your success to heights you've never thought possible - go with Tried and True Tutoring. Don't waste your money on a inexperienced tutor - invest in a professional tutor - invest in your future. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

Finals - Don't lock your child in a room with no windows

First of all, let us say Happy Holidays from all of us at Tried & True Tutoring!

We are very excited that the holidays are finally here, where we are able to spend time with our families and loved ones. During the holidays, students are excited that they don't have to go to school, and that they get gifts and hang out with their friends. I guess all things change with time.

Taking a break from studying over the holidays is necessary and essential to the growth of a student. If you don't ever let your mind rest, the students will begin to resent school even more, and when they are old enough to make their own decisions, they may not be the best ones.

You can either "pay now" and "play later" or you can "play now" and "pay later". Obviously, the former seems more appealing, but I believe the best way to live is to "pay now" and "play now". A healthy balance is really essential in the overall academic, social, and life success of a student.

Having been a teacher for many years, and a highly successful student myself, I am able to see the academic landscape in America today from a unique perspective - I was just a student myself not too long ago, but I have been a professional teacher for 6 years (Physics & Chemistry), as well as owner and operator of a large educational company for the past 5 years. Education is my passion - I have so much to give, and this is the best way I can give back to my community, and my country.

Some students try to rush in a lot of last minute studying before finals - I can not tell you how many frantic parent and student phone calls we receive during this time of year,  a few days before the final. Unfortunately, that leaves us no time to do our job - our assessments, our customized curriculum, our planning - and it leaves no time for us to check for understanding, or for the concepts to really solidify.

Cramming the night before an exam can be beneficial - you can "regurgitate" knowledge that you've memorized. However, those learned concepts will be lost shortly after the exam, and it will be as though you never have learned it. Learning is a process that takes the brain time, and repetition, and good practice, in order solidify the neural networks which actually allows your brain to retain information - or "learn".

Although we have all crammed for one thing or another - exam, presentation, interview, court date (hopefully not) - it is better to be pragmatic and consistent every day. Good habits are essential in a student's academic success - good habits are hard to break, and so are bad habits.

So how do you develop good habits? Or better yet, how does your son or daughter develop good habits? The Tried & True method of developing good study habits is consistency. Do not wait to get one of our professional tutors for the SAT, or Chemistry, or Algebra 2 right before the exam. Plan ahead, utilize the frontal lobe that you have been blessed with (frontal lobe is the part of the brain that is responsible for decision making and planning). If you plan ahead, and start using a tutor on a weekly, consistent basis, your student will undoubtedly develop better study habits. Also, give your student a nice quiet work space to study in. You need to study in the same environment that you will be testing in, in order to the recall the information to your maximum ability.

I could really go on all day about this, but the bottom line is, develop good habits by planning ahead. Have a weekly tutor, do homework consistently at a certain time, and talk about school at least one time every night at dinner. You need to make sure that your son or daughter knows the importance of succeeding in school. The truth is, 90% of the students in the classroom do not want to be there. They want to be with their friends, on their iPads, iPods, iPhones, and whatever other toys they like to play with. The point is, you need to make sure that your student knows how important education is to you as a parent - even if they simply succeed in school to please you - they will thank you later for it.

A good education opens up all the doors - poor education will close all of them. Don't lock your child in a room with no windows by failing to provide him the academic support he needs. The world is beautiful - a good education will give you an opportunity to see all of its beauty. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

What Everyone Ought To Know About the SAT

Preparing for the SAT can be daunting - what should you study, how much should you study? These are questions that most people simply do not know the answer to. Luckily, there are experts who know the SAT inside and out.

What if they change the SAT? This is bound to happen. Fortunately, those same experts will work tirelessly to make sure they master the new SAT test, as they have already done for the current SAT exam.

Getting professional preparation is the standard practice of high school students these days. Without preparation, you are at a clear disadvantage, as the average score of a student who receives preparation is approximately 150 points higher than a student who does not receive any test preparation, according to recent studies.

When you are looking for the right SAT Preparation, there are many things to consider

  • Is the company you are choosing have professional teachers who write the SAT Curriculum?
  • Does the company have manageable class sizes? Better yet, does the company offer 1-on-1 individualized instruction?
  • Does the company do summative and formative assessments in order to customize the curriculum to individual student needs?
  • Is the price affordable?
  • Is the location convenient?
  • Are they accredited by the Better Business Bureau?
If you choose Tried & True Tutoring, you can answer "yes" to all of the aforementioned questions. Check us out at www.triedandtruetutoring.com and give us a call today.

Get Rid of Overcrowded Classrooms Once and For All

I thought you may interested in hearing about an educational company in America that is privatizing specialized education in response to the the sea of problems like overcrowded classrooms, high drop out rates, and low employment after graduation that our current education system is facing.

What they have done is truly unique. They meet with students 1-on-1 in the student's home, and after initial assessments they customize curriculum based on the individual student's needs.

As a teacher, I find this program inspiring. In my classroom, we have over 40 students and our class length is 50 minutes. With roll call, paper shuffling, and management issues, I probably get around 35 minutes of actual instruction. This is less than one minute per student, so therefore I have to do the only thing I can do - preach to the masses. This is the only way to fit all of the information into this short period of time.

Tried & True Tutoring however, is taking all 50 minutes and dedicating it to one individual student. Their curriculum is customized to fit each individual's learning curve, speeding up and slowing down when appropriate.

What I really like about Tried & True Tutoring is that they are able to customize curriculum for students with special needs. They work with students with various learning disabilities including autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and Asperger's syndrome.

It has been extensively researched, and it has been concluded that individual private instruction is far more effective than a classroom environment, since each student can be corrected before developing destructive habits.

Anyway, if you would like contact them, call Jonathan at Tried & True Tutoring. His number is (747) 444-9907. I am sure he would happy to talk to you and tell you all about their programs - I really believe they are pioneering an educational shift in America.

Happy Thanksgiving from Tried & True Tutoring!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our parents, students, instructors, administration, and to all of you reading this!

We are very excited for all of our students as the December 1st SAT and December 8th ACT are approaching. It is never too late to get some last minute test preparation, and if you need a weekend "crash course" then you should attend our SAT Bootcamp, which are held at various high schools throughout the country. These SAT Bootcamp programs are held on the weekend, Saturday-Sunday, about 5 hours per day at a very, very affordable price. If you can not afford the program, contact us directly, and we will do our best to provide you with one of our loan or grant programs, to give you an opportunity for free SAT education.

Thanksgiving is a time of year for everyone in America to give thanks for all of the blessings around us. We want to thank all of our instructors for dedicating their lives to making the lives of our students that much better. The fulfillment we receive each day when one of our parents calls, ecstatic that her son just got accepted into Stanford, or when one of our students calls, crying tears of happiness when they received their 2360 near perfect SAT score. Although we are providing an extremely valuable service to our children, the rewards they give us in return are so much greater to us. So thank you, Tried & True students, for your hard work and dedication to success.

For any and all academic questions, feel free to visit our website at www.triedandtruetutoring.com or give us a call. A live representative is always available to speak with you and answer any questions you may have.

Don't be fooled by these huge companies who are providing you with SAT teachers and curriculum - the curriculum is dated, the teachers are unprofessional, and there is no personal attention. Happy Halloween! The Spooky Side of Tutoring

Happy Halloween everybody!

This is the time of year where everyone gets to dress in any costume or disguise they want, and go out with friends and family and celebrate. What are we celebrating for? Who knows, but it is fun, isn't it?

As I sit here in my Rex-Quan-Do costume writing this blog, I think to myself, why is tutoring scary? It seems pretty harmless on the surface....

As you become in expert in any field, you start to see all of the little details that you can not see at first glance. After really inspecting the tutoring & teaching profession, I notice all of the spoooooooky things....

1. Many claims are made from people who claim to be professional tutors, with limited experience, unproven results, and no track record of success.
2. Others claim to be professionals who have no teaching credentials
3. Some claim to be professionals when they have never been hired for paid tutoring!
4. Some tutors do the work for the student, so the lazy student likes the tutoring, but the parent paying for the services is none the wiser that her child is being completely robbed of his own education, and the parent is paying for it!

I could go on all day, but I would prefer to work on curriculum, so that we can provide the best tutoring services possible, nationwide. We will continue to grow, and I promise, we will have a professional tutor available near you, so that you don't have to be scammed by other companies making wild claims.

Get yourself into rhythm - bad habits are hard to break - so are good habits. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

Now You Can Have High Grades

By now, many of our students are set with our fabulous tutors are doing very well in their Chemistry, Algebra 2, Statistics, Physics, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and other classes that we are assisting them with. Since they started off the year with our tutors, they have been given the structure, organization, and guidance needed to get themselves into a strong academic rhythm.

A good rhythm, or good work and study habits, is crucial to the long-term success of any student. It is true, any student can do well on one test - much like any athlete can have one great game - but it is the longevity that defines greatness.

Good habits and structure start at home. Are you waking up at a specific time every morning? Do you eat a similar type of breakfast, or are you skipping breakfast all together? Are you showering and getting dressed before school, or are you rushing out the door, combing your hair in the car? Are you paying attention in class, or are you drawing pictures, thinking about what you are going to be doing after school? A wandering mind is an unfocused mind.

Many parents claim that their child had "ADD" or "ADHD". I understand that it is a scientifically proven learning disability, where there are not enough neurons firing at a given time to maintain focus. Therefore, doctors prescribe medication that blocks the re-uptake of neurons, and therefore more neurons are available for the task at hand. However, I feel that many parents with unmedicated children use this idea of ADD as a scapegoat, or excuse, for their child's failure in school.

School is not easy. School is too important to be easy. If it were easy, everyone would succeed, and it would be meaningless. School is a proving grounds - survival of the fittest. Those who can focus, work hard, and strategize for the long-term will win.

Some students do not have the luxury of private tutoring. Some students have parents with no education at all, and they are left to fend for themselves at school. Some students live in abusive homes, where learning the quadratic formula and when to apply it is the last thing on their mind. Unfortunately, it is not an even playing field. It is not an even or fair world we are living in. However, it is crucial to utilize the resources you have, and make the best out of it.

Some of the resources that you may be able to access:

  • Free Tutoring on Campus - before school, during lunch and nutrition, after school
  • Free Public Libraries - somewhere you can go to study in a quiet area, with limited distraction
  • Friends - Some friends may be able to help you with material which is confusing, or take notes for you when you are absent from class. Use your friends to help you succeed. You can help them succeed as well - mutualistic relationship, this is what friendship is (there's your Biology term for the day)
  • Family - Maybe your family will help you study. Maybe your family will pay for private tutoring - maybe your family will drive you to school so you don't have to walk, or make you breakfast so you don't have to wake up early to do so.
  • Time - be smart with your time. Do not waste time doing frivolous activities - get balance in your life, do not waste time, and you will be successful.
Whatever resources you have at your disposal, use them to maximize your benefits. Maximizing the use of your resources will lead you to success now and in the future.

Having said all this, private tutoring is an amazing resource. If your parents are willing to pay for private tutoring to see you succeed, you need to jump at that opportunity. First of all, make sure it is a tutor from Tried & True Tutoring, otherwise you may not get the quality you deserve. After that, heed the advice of the tutor - they have done what you are currently doing and have succeeded. Any time an adult is willing to spend time with you and mentor you, it is a good idea to listen and absorb the information they give to you. Someone older and wiser than you can always be very beneficial  - and day dreaming, not listening, and canceling appointments are all a waste of valuable resources.

Get yourself into rhythm - bad habits are hard to break - so are good habits. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

1 on 1, In-Home Private Tutoring - Better Than The Classroom

A quick synopsis of Marc Meinhardt - the writer of this article.

4.29 High School GPA
1470/1600 SAT (With No Test Prep)
UCLA Psychobiology Graduate (Pre-Med)
California Chemistry Teaching Credential (Post-Graduate Work Completed)
3 Years of Classroom Teaching Experience (Chemistry, Physics, Biology)
15 Years of Private Tutoring Experience (Elementary, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Single Variable and Multivariable Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, SAT Preparation, ACT Preparation, LSAT Preparation, GRE Preparation, TOEFL Preparation, ISEE & SSAT Preparation, ASVAB Preparation, etc.)

October SAT - 1 Week Away!

It is about that time of year where students will be taking one of the most important tests of their lifetime - the SAT. Are you excited?

Tried & True Tutoring is very excited for the upcoming SAT, because we have been working with 100's of students, preparing them to completely dominate the exam. Our proven techniques have been raising our student's practice scores dramatically, and they are ready to implement these strategies on the real thing!

If you didn't sign up for the October SAT, or you didn't get the preparation you need and deserve, do not worry; November 3rd is another opportunity for you to take the exam. You can take the test up to 3 times without colleges "frowning upon" it. You probably don't want to take the exam more than that, because eventually your scores lose their credibility.

We are extremely excited for the exam, and know that our students are itching to take it. If we're this excited, we can't imagine how excited our students are. When you know your about to achieve greatness, you are nervous, but more excited than anything else.

We are both nervous and excited for our students, but we look forward to helping them achieve their dreams. Our private 1 on 1 in-home private tutoring is the best education that you can receive - better than public or private schools. Our teachers are highly qualified, experienced, and you will be able to have them all to yourselves. The progress we make with our students is unmatched in the industry, because our tutors are trained by real professional teachers. We know the difference between classroom learning, and 1 on 1 privatized instruction. We've done it, we've taught it, and we are just waiting for your call, so we can help you achieve academic success now, and for the rest of your academic career. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

5 Weeks into the School Year

Some of our students are finally getting that dreaded 5 week report card. Many schools don't send out a 5 week report card anymore, and parents have to remember to check their child's grade online. Even still, around this time of year many frantic parents call us, because their child is failing one of their courses.

It is better to start with a private tutor for math and science before it is too late. The math skills you will learn from a good private tutor is invaluable. The skills, organization, and strategies that are taught by our tutors are not only going to benefit the student in his Algebra 2, Calculus, and Chemistry courses, but also going to benefit them in the future; during more rigorous courses like Physics.

SAT preparation is also something that many panicked parents call about when it is too late to help them. They want a massive score increase of their child, but they call a few weeks before the exam. No one can expect a student to increase his score much when there are only a few weeks left to prepare, especially on top of the normal course load that they are buried with.

SAT Prep should be started a minimum of 10 weeks before the exam. For any information about the SAT exam, college applications and resumes, and also any academic subjects, please feel free to call us at 747-444-9907. We would be happy to give you he advice that you need, to help your student reach a level of success that you have only dreamed of.

Chemistry, Statistics and Physics

Here at Tried & True Tutoring we understand the needs of our students. Some parents like to get their children tutoring before the school begins, so that they know they will have the support they need when classes become more rigorous.

Others, namely college students, wait until they are in trouble before reaching out to tutors. The subjects most commonly needed around this time of year are Chemistry, Statistics, and Physics.

Here at Tried & True Tutoring we have the best quality Chem, Stats, and Physics tutors for an affordable rate. The best thing to do is link up with a professional tutor when the struggles begin, rather than getting one when massive remediation needs to be done. If you get a tutor at the first sign of struggle, or even before that, then your chance of succeeding with an A or B is much higher.

We have curriculum designed, along with well-spoken, reliable, professional tutors, who can help you in the subjects you are struggling with. If you need any help at all, give us a call, and we will give you a quote, and the specifics about the tutor you will be working with, right over the phone. Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.

3 Weeks Until The October SAT

With 3 weeks left until the October SAT, we have a lot of panicked parents and students calling us for immediate SAT tutoring.

I have a good news for some of you high school seniors out there, who may be unaware of this fact. Even though you have to finish applications before November (for most schools), your SAT scores from November and December will still be sent to the universities you are applying to. College admissions will take into account November and December SAT scores before accepting and declining potential applicants. What does this mean for you?

Take a deep breath, and start prepping methodically for your November and December SAT tests. Remember, most colleges frown upon students who take the SAT exam more than 3 times. After that, it seems that students will have artificially high scores, and universities won't give your 2200+ score as much merit as they would have, had you gotten there in three tries. Three tends to be the magic number. You do not want to take the SAT exam more than three times.

Having said that, take as many practice tests as you can! Practice makes perfect. Our SAT Program is perfectly designed, with the right balance of in-home private tutoring, hours of homework, and practice tests in order to maximize your score on the SAT.

The School Year - Getting Off To A Good Start

There are many things you can do to prepare yourself for school, and I am going to give you a list of things to do to succeed, get good grades, maintain positive relationships with family and friends, as well maintain your extra curricular activities.

First of all, get materials and school supplies. Go with your parents or friends, and go buy notebooks, pens and pencils (get some red pens too, for grading your work during class), calculators and paper.

Organize your notebook into sections for each of your different classes. I prefer to have my own spiral notebook for each individual class, so I stay focused on the task at hand, when I am in a specific class. Binders with the "flap" on the inside, are really good keeping paperwork the teacher gives you like the syllabus, and long-term projects assigned in the beginning of the year.

Next, you are going to want to do some extra-curricular activities. Activities are a good way to make friends, relieve stress, and it will ultimately make you more successful. It will help you get into the college of your dreams, along with a great GPA and SAT of course.

So how are you going to get a great SAT score, and a high GPA? Well, I don't mean to sound bias, but an effective, private tutor can be one of your greatest assets. If you have the means, getting a professional tutor to come to your home once or twice a week will help you in all of your classes dramatically. A tutor from Tried & True Tutoring is someone that is a professional. When we say professional, we mean someone that has mastered the material, knows effective teaching methods, looks professional, speaks well, and will definitely be able to help you master the art of learning.

Anyway, I don't have too much time now, but as long as you stay focused and organized you will have a great school year! If you need advice from a California Credentialed Teacher, call 747-444-9907, and we will be happy to give you free advice over the phone! Visit www.triedandtruetutoring.com for more information.
